architecture [in] ]out[ politics
CONCEPT
Claudia Taborda and José Capela
NEW DATE
15 and 16 January 2011
Architecture is a political inscription: construction is dependent on the economic capacity of those commissioning the work; forms convey models of behaviour and environments of desire. Through architecture power manifests itself and asks to be represented. Architects’ creations are necessarily political and only those in power can sustain large-scale experiments. Within the context of abundance or scarcity, it is possible to imagine and produce a democratic (or democratising) architecture model. Architecture is a socialising operation. Consequently, it can affirm democratic ideas of a supportive, inclusive and fair world.
The conference architecture [in] ]out[ politics creates an opportunity to consider and discuss architecture as an instrument of democratic processes and as a temporal and spatial sign of their potentialities.
Architecture and politics in a dialectic are, per se, an open argument and process. This conference will address contemporary issues of architecture and politics in a cross-disciplinary approach, in which criticism is centred on four vectors: politics, participation, apparatus and future. Through these explorations a discourse will be engendered from current modes of architectural practices operating in culture as manifesto, place, manifestation, and function.
