The schools of architecture and landscape architecture were challenged by the Lisbon Architecture Triennale to elaborate, within the scope of their educational programme, responses to a question: how is it possible for architecture to contribute to making concrete improvements to the living conditions of the people of this neighbourhood?

The neighbourhood is Cova da Moura. Representing a complex reality in social and cultural terms, the area arose from peculiar historical circumstances and has followed an unusual path. The choice of Cova da Moura for the development of this project is due to its being recognised as a neighbourhood with a sociable dynamic that provides those involved in this project with a significant degree of interlocution. It was precisely in this neighbourhood that the project started, through a meeting with the Neighbourhood Commission (a federation of several associations located there), with the aim of establishing a partnership for the development of this study.

The second step was to develop, in collaboration with the EDP Foundation, the plan for a framework seminar open to students from the schools involved in the project.

The final stage will be an exhibition held at the Museu da Electricidade.

Cova da Moura Competion – Universities Seminar

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale, together with the EDP Foundation, promoted a Seminar for students on 25 January 2010 at the Camões Theatre. This seminar aimed to be a moment to reflect on and create a framework for the Competition which the Triennale has proposed to architecture and landscape architecture faculties: the challenge was to create projects for the Cova da Moura neighbourhood, taking into account the social, cultural and ethnical complexity of this community’s identity and history.
