4th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale

4th edition of Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Chief Curators

André Tavares e Diogo Seixas Lopes

Founded in 2007, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale is an open platform for debate, research and promotion of contemporary architecture. In 2016 its 4th edition takes place, establishing the project's maturation reaffirming its independency principles and plurality of visions.

The world is transformed through architecture. Hosted under the rubric The Form of Form, the fourth edition of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale will be curated by André Tavares and Diogo Seixas Lopes. It aims to readdress current trends and explore the possibility of architecture as a cultural device to produce built forms. In other words, it aims to explore the ways in which architecture transforms the world.

The programme will unfold from three core exhibitions: The Form of Form, Building Site and The World in Our Eyes. In addition the Satellites exhibitions and a number of Associated Projects will spread out through the urban landscape of Lisbon and provoke lively conversations that the curators hope will reset the contemporary architectural debate towards construction and its social and physical impact. Parallel to the main exhibitions the Talk, Talk, Talk conferences will extend the discussion further. Excellence will be awarded with the Début Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Universities Award.

Three major exhibitions

The Form of Form

One of architecture’s fundamental legacies is its own form. Not only is history built from this visual universe, but form is also a common language that aggregates architects from all over the world around a collective conversation. In this exhibition, which starts from a potentially infinite archive, three architects build a dialog that challenges notions of authorship and the limits of form.

Building Site

Just as the forms of architecture determine the construction site's organization, technology and the economical structure with which society organizes its methods of production, stimulates design practices.

From the communication between project and construction, the organization of time and money, to the rhetoric of politics or the technological excitement, it’s at the building site that everything is played out.

The World in Our Eyes

From an extensive list of participants, with projects submitted from the four corners of the world, this exhibition displays how architects observe, describe, analyse and represent the city. Contemporary practices continue to demonstrate how the architectural way of seeing allows not only to feed the actual practice, but also to overcome its own limits, spreading out into many different aspects of understanding the city.
