Summer School: Aurora Arquitectos + Australian university

For the fourth time, the Summer school is happening at Triennale’s cultural centre. Curated by Aurora Arquitectos and coordinated by Kirill de Lancastre Jedenov and Sérgio Antunes, the activities include an immersion in the Portuguese capital, that’s going to be a challenge for the twenty-four third to fifth year architecture students at the University of Western Australia (UWA).

The program includes field visits, talks, exchange of ideas, work sessions and presentations by national professionals and challenges in the specific context of Lisbon.

UWA was founded in 1911 as the State's first university.

Conversas et al.: VASSCO + António Sampaio da Nóvoa

“At a time of fragmentation and distancing, what can architecture do to open up spaces of conviviality and meeting in the city? Good conversations are made while we walk. They need ground,” says the Lisbon studio VASSCO. Common ground is the focus of this talk that opens the 3rd cycle of Conversas et Al., inspired by a quote from Gonçalo M. Tavares: “There is no limit to what it can support”.

António Sampaio da Nóvoa, honorary rector of the University of Lisbon with a background in Education and History, is the guest speaker to a conversation based on reflections on three works that enhance the ground, the public place: the housing building in Entrecampos, the Gaia Environment Museum and the Geneva Library.

VASSCO is the marriage between three architectural studios: VENTURA TRINDADE, SITE SPECIFIC and PLCO, an informal, spatial and functional partnership.

Book: Museu Imaginário da Europa e Outras Ideias

Presentation of Gonçalo M. Tavares' latest book as part of Aveiro Portuguese Capital of Culture 2024 program. This literary work, published by Relógio D'Água, explores the ideas of space, architecture and fragments. Its core was born out of research involving Os Espacialistas, a laboratory project for theoretical and practical research into the connection between Art and Architecture that began in 2008.

All the projects not yet built are sketches, drafts, fragments - ways in which people and in particular professionals working in architecture try not to despair. To wait, but not entirely, and in immobility. Waiting alongside images, producing them if possible - this is what many people are trying to do. Not to despair has never been easy.

Now launched in Lisbon, we invite you to this conversation between Gonçalo M. Tavares and Os Espacialistas.

For those who wish to purchase the publication, it will be available at the Lisbon Triennale bookshop for 27 euros.

Conversas et al.: FC Landscape Architecture + Tiago Monteiro Henriques

FC Landscape Architecture Studio has chosen a soil monolith from the collection of the Pedology Department of Instituto Superior de Agronomia as the subject of discussion for this talk. By inviting Tiago Monteiro Henriques, a researcher and consultant on the downtown lisbon square Martim Moniz Redevelopment Project, the studio wishes to bring to mind the inestimable value of soil as a founding concept of urban resilience. This fundamental natural resource is fertile ground for plants, organisms, water supply and nutrients, amongst others, which are essential to environmental and human well-being.

Founded in 1997 by Filipa Cardoso de Menezes and Catarina Assis Pacheco, FC Arquitectura Paisagista excels in projects for urban parks, public spaces, schools, institutional spaces and private gardens.

Periple Duet III

We continue our series of on-the-move residencies undergone by an emerging European generation that has grown up with unprecedented freedom of movement across a vast common territory. The challenge is to outline both the journey and the themes behind an observation exercise compiled in a travelogue. The only rule is to keep both feet on the ground: no planes allowed.

From Lina's open call,  we invite fellows to embark on a journey to reflect on architecture and landscape, framed by notions of borders, fluidity, displacement or heritage. We encourage non-linear itineraries where wandering, detours and the unexpected are part of the exploration and inspire the creation of a sound or audio-visual piece. As with any journey, this is a learning process shaped by the connections made along the way.

Conversas et al.: NOARQ + Gémeo Luís

The third talk around architecture brings together José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira, founder of the NOARQ studio, and guest Gémeo Luís, an established illustrator in various national and international formats. The conversation is built around a puzzle piece, symbol of the importance of unity in the construction of the whole. The challenge of this moment open to the public is to explore the relevance of contributions in a team and how each one is not only indispensable, but also becomes an antidote to an intellectual and procedural solitude that tends to become stale and sterile.

Founded 23 years ago, NOARQ focuses its research on landscape design, architecture and everyday objects. The studio has won national and international competitions, including the beach swimming pools at Vila Garcia de Arousa and the Halo Public Lift in Vigo, Spain, and the Ferreirinha Bridge over the Douro for the Metro of Porto.

Conversas et al.: SIA Architecture + Fernanda Fragateiro

The last talk of the 3rd Conversas et Al. features Sia studio and the guest Fernanda Fragateiro, renowned sculptor. An iron and raffia prototype is the object chosen for the debate, and not by chance. It coincides with a project that the studio and the artist are developing: a restaurant for Amadora City Hall in partnership with the community intervention association CRESCER. This is a prototype of the module that will be repeated along a suspended grid, creating an artistic installation that will fill the entire ceiling space of the dining room.

With a practice based on collective thinking and rehabilitation, Sia Arquitectura develops projects for single-family homes, residential buildings, public buildings, small-scale interventions, commercial and scenic spaces.

Taking more than what’s there to give

In partnership with VI PER Gallery, we are commissioning a double-exhibition that explores how energy moves, transforms, and dissipates – both within bodies and throughout the material world. In recent years, associations between architecture and energy have gained prominence, highlighting a continuous cycle of overexertion driven by the maximum extraction of potential energy at various stages of architectural production.

Brazilian spatial designer Alina Paias, based in the Netherlands, is curating this dual exhibition spanning from Prague to Lisbon. Paias is an independent researcher who engages with architectural production through feminist philosophy, new materialism, the environmental humanities, and the philosophy of technology. Paias is a member of the Editorial Team of Footprint: The Delft Architecture Theory Journal and was part of the curatorial team for the 2024 International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR).

This simultaneous exhibition is the third takeover of our cultural centre – Palácio Sinel de Cordes led by a LINA member and is part of this network’s programme.

Open House Lisboa 2025

Already in its 14th year, this festival returns in Spring 2025 for another weekend of free visits and walks. We invited the duo behind local independent publisher Monade, Daniela Sá and João Carmo Simões, to come up with the theme and programme.

As always, these two days are filled with activities open to everyone. Accessibility remains a key focus, with visits in English, tactile, and relaxed. Junior events welcome all families with children. We will also launch a new sound walk to explore another Lisbon neighbourhood independently, offering a fresh perspective on unique examples of the city's architecture over a broad time span.
