About

Sines: Urban Core, Industry and Port Structure

Taking the port city of Sines as a starting point, the curators propose an exercise that explores the boundary between poetic transformation and political experience. In a context dominated by large-scale infrastructures, how can we approach issues such as shared uses and the borderline spaces between the city proper and the waterfront? How can architecture intervene in the mechanical creation of logistic infrastructures? How should we occupy and transform spaces that are governed by a combination of strictly functional and safety-related criteria and the principles of maximum economic return? The 2016 competition resulted in 56 applications.

Winner

A Terceira Água by Flora di Martino, Rita Martins and Saule Grybenaite, from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, was the work that raised the most relevant questions and best represented the main trends in the strategies for responding to the territorial problem of Sines: the combination of an urban centre, industry and port structure.
