Results of the open call for curators of the Triennale 2025

The choice of the curatorial project for the 7th Triennale repeated the strategy of previous editions, in which we launched an international call for proposals. This open call was open from 15 June to 15 October 2022, partially coinciding with the dates of Terra precisely to allow interested teams to visit the Triennale 2022.

We received a total of 29 applications from 15 different countries, with Portugal, UK and Switzerland standing out, with four proposals each; followed by Italy with three; France, Germany and Mexico with two; and Austria, Belgium, Chile, South Korea, Slovenia, Spain, India and USA with one. If on the one hand the turnout did not match the Triennale 2019 call for proposals, with 48 applications, on the other it expanded the geographical scope of proposals, meeting our mission to broaden the perspectives around contemporary architecture.

As the Triennale is an international forum, we invited to the jury figures operating in different territories from practice to programming and curating, whom we thank for their valuable contribution throughout the various working sessions and presentations. The evaluation was carried out by: Cláudia Taborda (landscape architect and educator), Filipa Oliveira (art curator and programmer of the city of Almada), José Mateus (architect and chairman of the Lisbon Triennale), Matevz Čelik (architect and director of the LINA platform) and Pippo Ciorra (architect and curator of architecture at the MAXXI museum in Rome).

In a preliminary phase, the selection focused on the relevance of the theme, originality of the proposal and suitability to the objectives of the Triennale. After careful analysis of the proposals, the jury selected eight proposals by the following authors, in alphabetical order:

  • Daniel A. Walser with Anhelina Starkova and João Charters Monteiro
  • Lucinda Correia with Angelika Hinterbrandner and Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos
  • Maite Borjabad
  • Praxis – an informal collective formed by the studios fala, Kosmos, Lanza, and Chat
  • Scènes de Nuit (HEAD Genève) with Bureau
  • Tania Tovar Torres with Francisco Moura Veiga
  • Territorial Agency – John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Rönnskog
  • Ulrich Lehmann with Rosario Hurtado and Roberto Feo aka El Ultimo Grito

Of these, four were invited to advance to the second phase – Daniel A. Walser with Anhelina Starkova and João Charters Monteiro; Territorial Agency; Praxis; and Tania Tovar Torres with Francisco Moura Veiga – in which the structure and experience of the team involved, eloquence displayed in their presentation, teamworking skills and ability to work with the press, among others, were assessed.

The final choice resulted in the proposal of Territorial Agency – John Palmesino and Ann-Sofi Rönnskog. We are deeply grateful for the participation of all the teams that joined this call for submissions, recognising the contribution they all make to contemporary architecture and highly valuing the quality of their work.
