Avenidas Novas Renewed

From and by: Paula Moura Pinheiro

Synopsis — Portuguese only

The itinerary begins in the emblematic Galeto – symbol of the modernity of the 60s and 70s – and ends in the complicity of Jardim Amália Rodrigues, the work of architect Ribeiro Telles, an exponent of contemplation and peace. A route from Saldanha to Parque Eduardo VII, going through República Avenue, Duque d’Ávila, Gulbenkian, Marquês da Fronteira Street, Azul Neighbourhood and Lago do Roseiral. The journalist Paula Moura Pinheiro reminds us of the beginning of the 20th century and the importance of the architect Norte Júnior, with the GPS guiding us to the bourgeois lustre. A journey made of individual and collective memories for a re-encounter with the renewed New Avenues where stores with stories – which are born in the clothes of the family store Casa Xangai, in the Versailles Bakery, an essential point of passage of cultural life from 1922 and in the Pearl of Chaimite – have address and give them soul.
