About the Place
This flat occupies a pre-Pombaline building which resisted the 1755 earthquake and is composed of many interconnected spaces with irregular configurations. The project seeks to expose some of the flat’s original construction features, such as skirting boards made of 18th-century tiles, solid brick vaults, stone blocks from Cerca Fernandina (Lisbon’s medieval city wall), original shutters, and to juxtapose new elements related to the contemporary living demands. Its present-day story, narrated by the clean and elegant design of the new pieces, makes a contrast, and underlines the memories of time and the layers of history of the pre-existing elements.
