Armazéns Abel Pereira da Fonseca – 8 Marvila

  • Original Authors:
  • Manuel Norte Júnior
  • (1917)

Following several relocations, this winery settled here in 1917. Its large cellars and Art Nouveau façade, inspired by wine barrels, earned it the nickname ‘Cathedral of Wine’. The traditional frigate featured in its logo symbolises its proximity to the Tagus, via which most goods destined for Lisbon arrived, and the nearby quays where boats laden with Ribatejo wines docked. The building was restored during Expo 98 as part of Sarmento Matos’s ‘Caminhos do Oriente’ programme, giving it a new lease of life. More recently, as part of the area’s profound real estate and cultural transformation, the City Council refurbished the warehouses to house 8 Marvila, a hub where alternative culture, independent initiatives, the arts, commerce, and leisure intersect.
