The history behind this asymmetric, art nouveau-inspired facade goes way back. The building started out as the head offices of the O Mundo newspaper, the first to bring the news of the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. In recognition of the newspaper, which was led by França Borges at the time and supported the proclamation, the name Rua do Mundo was given to the then Rua Larga de São Roque (today’s Rua da Misericórdia). Later, during the New State or Portuguese dictatorship, the building was home to Diário da Manhã, an official organ of the National Union, a pro-dictatorship organisation. Strangely enough, on the opposite side of the street were the República offices, which was very much from the opposition. Lastly, it was the head office of the New State newspaper Época and remained empty after the 25 April revolution. Today, it is home to an event and exhibition space on the ground floor; a restaurant on the first floor; administrative services on the second floor; the third floor is a technical level with a library.
