Marvila Municipal Library

  • Original Authors:
  • Raul Hestnes Ferreira
  • (2016)

This library is located in an area of Marvila where its rural and industrial registry is being transformed into collective public housing lots. It is a space for reading, art, training and learning, where cultural programming is thought of as a means of building a community for the residents from the surrounding quarters. The project rehabilitated the pre-existing Quinta das Fontes building and constructed another building from scratch. With about 2600 square metres, it is the largest municipal library in Lisbon, organised in different areas such as auditorium, reading rooms and children’s rooms. The central space, with its upright height and multiple light entrances, shows the importance, for the author’s works, of geometry and material quality in defining its proportions and shape, as well as recalling the influence of Louis Kahn’s architecture, with whom he has worked in the United States of America.
