Campo das Cebolas

  • Interventions:
  • Carrilho da Graça Arquitectos
  • (2017 reabilitação)

The Portas do Mar plaza, which includes the current Campo das Cebolas and the space known as Ribeira Velha, next to the Praça do Comércio buildings, is seen as an opportunity to rethink the relationship between the city and the River Tagus. The intervention strategy includes creating a large open space – an opening up that makes it clear that the old city went as far as the line of the ancient walls, where Casa dos Bicos now stands – with a slight inclination upwards to Cathedral slope and the castle. At the other end, next to the waterfront avenue, is a flat area that establishes a direct relationship with the river. Underneath the new square is an underground parking facility with roughly 210 spaces, occupying the space between the old shorefront and the wall of the old Ver-o-Peso quays.
