Carpintarias de São Lázaro

  • Interventions:
  • ARC Carpintarias de São Lázaro ,
  • BB Arquitetos ,
  • Borges de Macedo Arquitetos
  • (2018 reabilitação)

A carpentry shop had operated since 1928 on this winding street that climbs from Martim Moniz to Desterro. In an operation common to buildings with qualities that resist time, this one witnessed a change from an industrial use to a cultural one, from work to leisure, from private to public. The multidisciplinary structure is open to the city and focuses on visual and performing arts, music, cinema, and gastronomy. As a flexible space, it guarantees the necessary technical and spatial conditions for exhibitions, concerts, or artistic residencies. The intervention concentrates on specific elements, and everything else is left in raw. The atmosphere thrives on this contrast, and the project’s icon is the spiral staircase leading to the mezzanine and rooftop, a volume in white painted sheet metal that stands out from the exposed concrete.
