Carpintarias de São Lázaro

Located in a winding road that bridges the gap between Martim Moniz and Desterro, this building housed a carpentry factory since 1929. The wide spans, typical of industrial typologies, stand out to passers-by in the street. A recent rehabilitation has transformed the Carpintarias de São Lázaro into a cultural centre, a multidisciplinary structure that is open to the city, focusing on visual and performing arts, music, cinema, and gastronomy. The aim was to create a versatile space, assuring the technical and spatial conditions necessary for the events on the agenda, namely exhibitions, concerts or art residencies. The intervention addresses specific elements, leaving a raw look to everything else. The atmosphere of the space lives from this contrast, the project’s icon being the spiral staircase leading to the mezzanine and roof, a volume in white painted metal sheet that stands out from the exposed concrete.
