Opened in 2023, this Cultural Centre in Bairro Alto is an old dream of José Pinho’s, who founded the Ler Devagar bookshop in nearby Rua de São Boaventura in 1999. It functioned there up until 2005 when it was evicted when gentrification and property speculation began in Lisbon. After a period of nomadism, it found new roots in LX Factory in 2009. José Pinho, an indisputable figure in Lisbon’s cultural life who died in 2023, had always wanted a place where he could relax at his pleasure, simply be and create. His dream now occupies a space that has had many uses and transformations, which one senses walking through the interior. It is an example of the resistance of certain buildings to the passage of time, and of the changes in terms of functions and appropriations – of the hybrid designs in the transitional spaces in the city, in architecture, in society and in life.
