In 1981 the Board of Directors decided to place the head offices of the Portuguese bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos in a single building, as the bank’s activities were spread over roughly 26 separate buildings around Lisbon; they argued that this caused inconveniences and a lack of work conditions. The plot chosen was a huge site near Campo Pequeno, where the Lusitânia Ceramics Factory had operated. The competition programme featured five parameters: representativeness, workable spaces, flexibility, safety and management. Begun in 1987, the work was completed in 1993. Thirty years on, the building of 15 storeys (nine above ground and six below) and approx. 200,000 sq. m., is to be the APP (Portuguese Public Administration) Campus and is currently undergoing a gradual transformation process.
