Extension of the Lisbon Oceanarium – the Sea Building

  • Original Authors:
  • Campos Costa Arquitectos
  • (2011)

This project for the extension of the Oceanarium was focused on answering its new programmatic needs, seeking to create an architectonic work that interacted with the existing building, an icon of the urban imaginary of this area of the city, boosted by the 1998 World Fair. As a detached volume that doesn’t touch the ground, the building transforms into a roofing structure for the square that had been created there. Combining aesthetic demands with sustainability concerns, it is designed by means of façades shaded by a skin of ceramic flakes in three colour tones — a work by the Cumella atelier that reinvents traditional ceramics. Hosting a temporary exhibition room, an auditory and service areas for the public, the Sea Building establishes only one moment of connection with the Oceanarium, through a linear bridge. The definition of the circulation and distribution functions becomes the element that designs the building’s interior spatiality, that deals with different floor-to-ceiling heights throughout a central void that crosses three floors.
