The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation complex is a remarkable project and the outcome of a rigorous interdisciplinary work developed through the close dialogue between architecture and landscape architecture, thus standing out as a unique reference in Portuguese modern architecture. The building was awarded the Valmor Prize in 1975 and classified as a National Monument in 2010. The Park goes beyond the limits of the building, and takes part in the definition of diverse interior spaces. There is a clear dichotomy between humanity and nature, based on innovative principles, such as the construction system of the lake under the building, or the artificial creation of the humid ecosystem. The public garden will be extended southwards to Rua Marquês da Fronteira, together with the intervention at the Modern Art Centre.
