About the Place
This is one of five tunnels included in the Aqueduto das Águas Livres water supply system. The underground system extended to a total of 2,835 metres, including all branch tunnels, and supplying water to a number of public institutions, including the Official Printing House, the Public Promenade, the Casa da Misericórdia, the garden at São Pedro de Alcântara and the Municipal Guard barracks in Largo do Carmo. It is a unique space that begins at the Casa do Registo next to the Mãe d’Água water cistern and ends at the square in front of the Teatro de São Carlos.
