This renovation of one of Lisbon’s most emblematic buildings, the scene of several historical events in the life of the country and the city, gave it a new use and a new colour that contrasts with the stone masonry and provides for a clear reading of the facade. Before construction of the present-day train station, there used to be a retreat on the site in the 17th century, before it was converted into Santa Apolónia Convent at the order of Pope Clement XI, which lasted until 1833, when the nuns were transferred to the Santa Ana and Santa Mónica convents. The building later served as a residence for the Royal Casa Pia charitable institution and the Army Arsenal College. The conversion of part of the building into a hotel saw the creation of 126 new accommodation units, reception spaces, restaurant, service and technical areas across the building’s east wing and central body.
