Located in Rua da Alfândega on a site in line with the grid designed for the Pombaline Baixa district, the current church building is the result of reconstruction efforts, after the 1755 earthquake, of the former Church of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia de Lisboa, the headquarters of the first Misericórdia charity institution in Portugal. The building combines elements from a number of churches as well as remnants from the church that existed on the site, such as the façade, which is, together with the Hieronymite Monastery in Belém and Tower of Belém, one of the best examples of Manueline structures to have survived the earthquake. The Pombaline-style interior features one nave only and the chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament from the former Misericórdia Church. In 2014, the Menos é Mais architectural team carried out a renovation commissioned by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon, marked by discreet interventions and restoration work that strongly enhanced the reading of the original church and its constituent elements. The church was listed as a National Monument in 1910.
