This impressive monastic church is one of the most richly decorated and varied examples of Baroque religious architecture in Lisbon. The interior has a longitudinal, Latin-cross, plan with a single nave and side chapels, protruding transept and a deep-lying chancel area, interconnects with the U-shaped former monastery. Also known as the Monastery of the Paulists Church or Santa Catarina of Mount Sinai Church, the building was partially destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755 and rebuilt shortly afterwards in 1763. The main facade, which is in complete alignment with the street before it, is very imposing and dramatises its urban presence through the access via the spacious exterior narthex.
