Typical of architect Raúl Hestnes Ferreira’s work, this building was designed to shelter a research institute in the field of Social Science. Built between 1998 and 2002, it constitutes the fifth construction within the complex of ISCTE, located at the eastern end, working as an autonomous element, though completely integrated in the larger structure it is part of. The exterior is covered in limestone and punctuated by exposed white concrete, also used inside. Designed to shelter the most complex programme of the whole ensemble, one must emphasize the main public areas and its articulation with the outdoor spaces—Library, Auditorium and courtyards—and the more reserved and private areas that allow space for reflection. Reception is made through the courtyard, granting direct access to the more crowded areas and allowing these to flow into the floors above. The space is organized according to the programme, which is why the lower floors are focused on outdoor activities, whereas the higher floors are mainly destined to internal activities related to research and to the library. The detailed design deserves special attention for the pieces of furniture, which largely contribute to the special atmosphere of a building distinguished with the Valmor Prize in 2002.
