Higher Institute of Agronomy

On the eastern and southern flank of Monsanto Park, a hunting reserve linked to King João IV and the Calvário Royal Estate and Palace emerged in the 17th century. In the latter half of the 19th century the Instituto Agrícola e Escola Regional de Lisboa (Agricultural Institute and the Regional Lisbon School) was installed there, as were the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory and the Agricultural Exhibition Pavilion, which showcased many exotic plants. After the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic, the Higher Institute of Agronomy was founded, with several new buildings erected on the site having to do with agricultural and forestry education and research. A central courtyard organises the buildings with intersecting wings. In the interior spaces dedicated to teaching, the classrooms, laboratories, the Great Hall (for auspicious occasions) and the former library stand out.
