Built on the site of the Opera House of King João V, built at the end of the 18th century, the Luís de Camões Theatre was rebuilt in 1880 and renovated in 2018, reopening as LU.CA, a municipal facility with an artistic programme dedicated exclusively to children and young people. The in-depth intervention has restored the Italian-style theatre to its former splendour, typical of the 19th century. The project was carried out by the Contemporânea studio, led by architects Manuel Graça Dias and Egas José Vieira, and won the Valmor Prize and two categories of the National Urban Rehabilitation Prize (Social Impact and City of Lisbon). The small elevation has three doorways surmounted by oval windows, lined with stonework and framed by massed pilasters, and crowned by a cornice and an entablature on which stand acroteria statues: two full-length figures on the sides, perhaps Tragedy and Comedy, and three busts in the centre.
