Contrasting with the curved lines of the new MAAT building, the Central Tejo is unique in the architectural panorama of Lisbon, as one of the most beautiful examples of industrial architecture from the early 20th century in Portugal. Its structure is based on typical western iron architecture of the period, which is covered with solid brick, configuring and decorating the façades in artistic styles that range from Art Nouveau to Classicism. Today it is a museum that exhibits and preserves the history of electricity, with all its original machinery in a perfectly conserved state, and it also serves as an exhibition space working in conjunction with the new neighbouring MAAT building.
