Commissioned in 1701 by Francisco Baltazar da Câmara, it was acquired in 1752 by José da Câmara Telles, Count of Ribeira Grande. It remained an aristocratic residence until the mid-20th century, and the first Portuguese nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901, João da Câmara, was born here. Since the end of the 19th century, this palace hosted private educational institutions, such as Colégio Arriaga or Portugal, and was later leased by the State as a public school. From 1939 to 1947 it was Liceu D. João de Castro, then Liceu Rainha D. Leonor until 1960, and Liceu Rainha D. Amélia until it closed in 2022. It is now under construction to house Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins, a cultural project that also includes a hotel.
