Benfica Market

  • Original Authors:

  • (1971)

Benfica Market was the last market to be opened before the 25 April 1974 revolution. At the time, it already faced competition from the supermarkets, which had started to crop up and whose modernity was attractive to those already living in this relatively new area of Lisbon. With its 2800 sq. m and more than two hundred sales outlets, it is a traditional market that distinguishes itself by its size, being one of the largest in the city, its architectural form and the commercial vigour it continues to show. In 2021 the Oitoo architectural firm was awarded the contract for the market’s renovation by SRU, but it still has not yet been fulfilled.
