About the Place
The Benfica Market was the last to open before the 25 April Revolution. Even then, it was already facing competition from the supermarkets that were beginning to appear and whose modernity was attracting residents of this relatively new Lisbon neighbourhood. Spanning 2,800 m² with over two hundred stalls, it remains a traditional market that stands out for its size – it is one of the largest in the city – its architectural design, and the commercial vitality it continues to display. In 2021, Oitoo studio was awarded the contract for the building’s refurbishment project, which was launched by SRU (the municipal urban regeneration company).
