The eight floors of MUDE occupy a Pombaline block that has been the target of extensive interventions and expansions over the centuries. In the 1920s it became the headquarters of the bank BNU, then a second expansion by Luís Cristino da Silva and a third intervention by António Garcia and Daciano da Costa took place. In 2001, a renovation project for the bank CGD started, but the works were interrupted. The building was left empty, without technical infrastructure and demolished interiors. In 2009, it opened to the public as a temporary museum and was kept as such until 2016, when major works started. The new project seeks to transform a closed, hierarchical, and segregated building, the reflection of an autocratic culture, into a living, inclusive and dynamic place that promotes the participatory experience of its visitors.
