Located on the site of the former São Julião Church, the museum completes a pombaline block next to the City Council. Its ecclesiastical form is striking from the outside, as well as its verticality from the inside. As a church surprisingly transformed into a museum of money, it shows spatial, material and functional exuberance. The group of buildings has belonged to the Banco de Portugal since the 1930s, and the church area was desacralised and converted into service facilities – it was even used as a parking lot. After the renovation and restoration work carried out between 2009 and 2012, the church became a cultural space open to the community. The new museum displays its collection in clusters with interactive technology and organises temporary exhibitions alongside the D. Dinis Wall Interpretation Centre.
