This museum occupies the former Church of São Julião, closing a block of the Baixa Pombalina next to the City Hall. Its ecclesiastical design stands out, both in its urban exteriors and interior vertical halls. This entire complex belongs to the Portuguese National Bank since the 1930s, and the church was desecrated and rebuilt for offices and administration facilities. After the rehabilitation and restoration works carried out between 2009 and 2012, this space was relaunched as a cultural asset for the community. However unusual the transmutation of a church into a museum related to money may sound, the place now emanates a spatial, material and programmatic wealth. The new museum displays its collection through interactive technology and promotes temporary exhibitions. It also houses the group of researchers, conservation specialists and curators “Núcleo de Interpretação da Muralha de D. Dinis.”
