Rua dos Correeiros Archaeological Site – NARC

  • Interventions:
  • Atelier Brückner
  • (2021 reabilitação)

In the heart of the Pombaline centre, near the Rua Augusta Arch, one can see the thickness of time in the city of Lisbon through the remains of the different occupations of the city, from the Punic to the Medieval and Pombaline periods, and discover a collection from different periods, especially the Roman period (mosaics, salt tanks, ceramics and human remains), arranged in such a way as to show the different phases of occupation of this riverside area of the city. The Rua dos Correeiros Archaeological Centre (NARC) is the result of the work carried out in the 1990s on the building of the Millennium BCP Foundation, which revealed the archaeological value of the Pombaline Baixa. Its museography was completely renovated in 2021 by Atelier Brückner, which modernised the space with a series of multimedia structures, making the site more interactive and the visit more intuitive. This exceptional site in the city has been open to the public since 1995 and was classified as a National Monument in 2015, due to its importance in Lisbon’s urban archaeology and its unique cultural value at a national level.
