This important cultural centre in the Benfica neighbourhood, still playing an active role today, is made up of the former manor house, which has been transformed and extended since the 18th century, some 20th century annexations from the National Veterinary Laboratory period and what remains of the gardens. The palace owes its name to Maria Joana Baldaya, who lived here from 1840 to 1859 in what was once the estate of Justice Manoel Ignacio de Moura. There followed a succession of different owners, including José Isidoro Escarlate, nephew of and heir to Ms Baldaya. In 1890 it was turned into an inn/hotel and in 1908 the Portuguese State purchased the palace to install the Veterinary and Bacteriological Pathology Laboratory there. In 2015 it was ceded by the City Council to Benfica Parish Council, which set up the current cultural centre.
