About the Place
Built in 1849, this summer palace forms part of a former agricultural estate rooted in the rural landscape of the Ribeira de Alcântara valley and the Monsanto hillside. Its original landscape design was altered by the development of Estrada de Benfica. The building underwent a decorative refurbishment between 1887 and 1892. The ceramic washbasin fountain leads us into the Dining Room, where the three Bordalo Pinheiro siblings (Rafael, Columbano and Maria Augusta) collaborated on ceiling panels, scenic faience panels by the Sociedade Fabril das Caldas, and stained-glass windows. During the guided tours, the historical and decorative context of the palace will be presented and the decorative elements of the dining area explored (both those still in situ and those that have since been dispersed).
