In the Campo de Ourique district is a unique residential courtyard that was not designed for the working class. Influenced by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, Jaime Gonçalves ceded the space for the construction of studios and workshops. During the New State’s [Portugal’s dictatorial regime] period of consolidation, the National Propaganda Secretariat promoted art as a means of raising the national identity, leading to the emergence of this site, described by José Eduardo Carvalho as a centre of cultural effervescence, where figures such as Cottinelli Telmo, Eduardo Nery, Helena Almeida and Manuel Lapa left their mark. Today, only a few of the original ateliers are left, most of them having been converted into residences still in use.
