Lisbon Drainage Master Plan

  • Original Authors:
  • Câmara Municipal de Lisboa
  • (em construção)

The goal of the Lisbon Drainage Master Plan is to protect the city from flooding and prepare it for the challenges brought about by climate change. Implementation of the plan by 2030 translates to actions for reinforcement, renovation, registration and monitoring in the sewage network and the construction of retention basins and two large drainage tunnels for water emptying purposes. In addition to mitigating social and economic impacts, the tunnels are also a response to environmental issues: the existence of anti-pollution basins that capture and store rainwater; and the use of recycled water for street washing, plant watering and firefighting purposes. In this work phase one can visit the digging of the first tunnel in a 5 km-stretch between Monsanto and Santa Apolónia.
