Located on one of Lisbon’s most beautiful squares, the barracks were the site of one of the most important episodes in the 25 April 1974 revolution: the siege and surrender of then Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano. The long history of this former Carmelite monastery founded by Nuno Álvares Pereira – from the 19th century it was a military site for the General Command Centre of the Royal Guards, later for the Municipal Guards and now for the GNR rural police force – meant that it underwent several transformations, be it because of the different types of occupation or its destruction in the earthquake of 1755. The complex with an irregular plan and two quadrangular courtyards has two facades, one facing the square on the western side and the east facade facing the Baixa district and the hills of Castelo and Graça, accommodating the difference in height levels.
