Rua das Gaivotas 6 – Teatro Praga
- Interventions:
- Artéria
- (2015 reabilitação)
Located in the web of streets of Santa Catarina, a central residential area in Lisbon, Teatro Praga occupies the space of a former school. Having been known as the “Escola das Gaivotas” primary school for some 50 years, the former Palácio Alcarcão building has now been converted to new uses. The palatial building, which dates back to the 16th century, is included in the Municipal Heritage Inventory (IMP). The main floors of the former school are now occupied by Pólo das Gaivotas, and Teatro Praga has taken over the area with house door number 6, hence Rua das Gaivotas, 6 – a venue for performative arts, visual arts, conferences, literature events, cinema and workshops. The aim of the remodelling project was to create a space that represents continuity with the building as a whole, while reflecting a great desire for adaptation, improvisation and interaction with the city.
