Supreme Court of Justice

  • Original Authors:
  • Eugénio dos Santos
  • (Séc. XVIII)

The Supreme Court building is the third of six Pombaline blocks on the northeast side of Praça do Comércio, built after the earthquake of 1755 on the site of the former Terreiro do Paço square. It is part of the ministerial complex around the square, the architecture of which is defined by repeating arcades. Mouzinho da Silveira was the great reformer of the judicial system, including the Supreme Court, which has been based at this site since 1833. It is worth noting that, in contrast to other ministries and state institutions, the uppermost echelon of the Portuguese judicial system has remained in the same premises for almost 200 years.
