About the Place
Originating in the São Jorge Castle, in a tower that still bears the same name, the Torre do Tombo National Archive (NATT) is now located next to the University City of Lisbon. Covering 54,900 square metres, the NATT is divided into three main areas: archives and research, cultural activities and administrative services. Known as the Torre do Tombo, it is a central organic unit of the Directorate General of Books, Archives and Libraries and has been the central archive of the Portuguese State since the Middle Ages. Its first Guard-Mores were also Chroniclers-Mores of the Kingdom. Over 600 years old, it is one of the oldest active Portuguese institutions. The building was declared a Monument of Public Interest in 2012.
