Torre do Tombo

  • Original Authors:

  • (1990)

This archive originated in the Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon, more precisely in a tower of the same name that still stands today. Now next to the great centre of learning and research that is the University of Lisbon Campus, the Torre do Tombo National Archives (ANTT) occupy a floor space of 54,900 square metres divided into three main areas: archive and research; cultural activities; and administrative department. Commonly referred to as the Torre do Tombo, the National Archives is an organic unit of the Directorate General for Books, Archives and Libraries that has served as the central archives of the Portuguese State since the Middle Ages, with its Chief Record Keepers also serving as Chief Chroniclers of the Kingdom. With more than 600 years of history, it is one of the oldest Portuguese institutions still in operation. In 2012 this building was listed as a Monument of Public Interest.
