By decree issued by the Marquess of Pombal, the construction of the Real Fábrica de Cordoaria [Royal Rope-making Factory] on land next to the São João da Junqueira fort, one of the first areas of Lisbon to be industrialised. The design distributed the functional spaces in a model-based way, with one highlight being the long central body parallel to the Tagus to house the rope-making workshop. The adjacent areas featured sections for dyeing, ironing, warping, sails, sewing and flag-making, weaving and cleaning materials, as well as support areas, such as carpentry, ironworks and the administrative departments. In 1902 the School of Tropical Medicine moved in. In 1995 a protocol between the Portuguese Navy and Lisbon City Council made possible the current multi-purpose use of this space of more than 1,250 sq. m for exhibition purposes.
