The consolidated city and its planning

Urban Walk by Paula Melâneo

Sunday 11am  Urban Walk

This urban route guides us through a brief history of the Almada municipality, from its rural inception, through the transformation of economic activities and urban sprawl, to the need for urban planning and the creation of infrastructures.

Almada has been at various times designed by the best urban planners in the national territory (such as Étienne de Groër or Faria da Costa), has housed important industries in the country (such as Lisnave) and has been considered one of the best beach and leisure tourist destinations for the Portuguese, from the settlement of royalty in Alfeite to the popular Costa da Caparica.

We start the route at the Centro Cívico, planned in the late 1940s, with facilities that served the population and made it a public space of reference in the town at the time. We will walk by some buildings such as the Incrível Almadense, Mercado Municipal and the headquarters of União Eléctrica Portuguesa, covering key moments in the city's history, its social and urban attributes and the new lines of its modernisation.
