Urban Walk by José Manuel Castanheira
There are always two different cities that present themselves in the same place: one that I think I know, and another that seems strange. As I wander, I draw labyrinths between memories and novelties. A displacement in order to learn to lose myself (Walter Benjamim), a learning only possible in the fullness of the senses. At every moment so many events, factories of time, merge with remnants of maps that park in the mind. Layers of people and objects in permanent renovation (Pamuk) configure the coincidences that arise between the city that I believe I know and the imaginary of the city.
Following this exercise, I make up a journey in my city, the place of so many metamorphoses. From Sr João's Tasca (Casalinho da Ajuda) I imagine the Real Barraca (Galli Bibiana) in whose ashes the National Palace of Ajuda was built. Then, going downhill and always in perspective of the river, we find the old warehouse, on Avenida da Índia, which became a temple and shelter for Lagoa Henriques and Carlos Amado (also refugees from other ashes) later an abandoned ruin that survived the expansion of the CCB, and which is now being reborn as a Cabinet or Theater of Curiosities (Karnart).
