Marvila Municipal Library

  • Original Authors:
  • Raul Hestnes Ferreira
  • (2016)

Located on a fringe on the western side of Marvila between the Chelas social housing development and one of the dispersed areas of historic settlement in the east of the city, this Library was opened in 2016. It assumes its role as a leverage for social inclusion, a move that completely inverts the trend towards neglect that was the destiny of the area’s residents, and which reflects the modern 21st-century approach to the idea of the library. As Lisbon’s largest public library, it consists of two volumes – one completely new building and an old restored one (the former Quinta das Fontes mansion). The library features a number of reading/work rooms, animation spaces for children and babies, an auditorium, a foyer, a café, a space that pays homage to the writer José Gomes Ferreira, as well as the whole book collection a library has to offer.
