Cell C Housing Blocks

  • Original Authors:

The Olivais neighbourhood was born under the star of the Athens Charter, a document from the 1930s on the future of city building. This former farming land zone, where the Encarnação neighbourhood already existed, as well as another smaller urban nucleus, saw the emergence, in less than two decades of this new city “for all”, rich and poor. The “Cell C” housing blocks in Olivais Sul managed to develop an urban fabric that was positively marked by social spaces and aspects of topographic and landscaping integration. Bartolomeu Costa Cabral and Nuno Portas’ design features external shared galleries/walkways, combinations of different typologies and the recovery of the street flanked by buildings, as well as placing the towers in the urban grid instead of leaving them standing alone in green spaces. The mixed material solution, using reinforced concrete and exposed brickwork, in objects with compositional variations adds visual variety and quality that remains to this day, 50 years after the structures were built.
