House in Restelo

  • Original Authors:
  • Mafalda Batalha
  • (2015)

This is an example of a complete contemporary architectural intervention in an essentially residential neighbourhood from the 1940s that experienced its greatest period of development in the two subsequent decades. The predominance of single-family houses made this area the scene of considerable work for architects in that period, but today few examples of that architecture remain. Mafalda Batalha’s design features a dwelling that creates a strong relationship with its surroundings through two concrete volumes placed on top of each other so as to integrate better with the topography and existing vegetation of the site. The building contrasts steel and white concrete with the green of the surrounding gardens. In the interior, the two bodies inter-relate by creating intermediate levels, providing comfortable living and softer transitions between the living spaces. This building won a Valmor Prize Honourable Mention in 2015.
