Some 20 years after his initial design, Renzo Piano, Pritzker Prize recipient and architect of the famous Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, will now see his plans for this industrial area of Lisbon in transition become reality. Covering an area of eight hectares, the site of a former weapons factory, the development is currently the largest construction project in Lisbon – with 12 blocks containing housing (499 homes), offices and retail spaces, a total of 132,485 square metres floor space. The public parking capacity will be 600 parking spaces. Together with the Matinha Detail Plan, this intervention contributes to returning an expansive riverfront area to the city; that area will include a recreational green space structure that will be organised in conjunction with the rest of the city. Piano was inspired by Lisbon’s typical ceramic tile coverings in Lisbon, developing a technological proposal for the materialisation of these new buildings, something for which he is renowned.
