On the eastern side of Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque close to Belém Palace stands the National Coach Museum. It houses a unique collection in a unique museum building that has already successfully integrated itself into the fabric in this border zone between the scale of the riverfront, the scale of the historic and representative buildings nearby and the scale of the standard housing in Rua da Junqueira. The building presents itself as not only a cultural facility but also as a public space. Two structures, one of which is white and more opaque, the other built in glass and exposed concrete, contain the program and define the new exterior spaces. A large nave stands out as the main exhibition space and outside, a recently opened pedestrian walkway and cycle path links the building to the River Tagus. The street is extended and merges and interacts with the museum.
