About the Place
Though it has witnessed many decisive periods in the history of Portugal, the Bemposta palace will always be associated with Catarina de Bragança, who became Queen Catherine, wife and widow of Charles II of England. Since the installation of the Portuguese Military Academy in 1851, it has been occupied by the Officer’s Schools of the Portuguese army, integrating in recent years officers of the Republican National Guard. Part of the civil parish of Arroios, its importance was recognised through its listing as a National Monument in 2001. It currently houses the Military Academy Command.
