Santa Clara 1728
- Interventions:
- Manuel Aires Mateus
- (2016 reabilitação)
This is a prime example of architecture for tourist purposes in Lisbon. Aire Mateus’ design recovers an old building facing the Santa Clara Market, the Pantheon, the River Tagus and, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Lisbon’s Feira da Ladra or flea market. The 18th-century palatial building was converted into a sumptuous guest house with only six rooms, a spacious dining room and a hidden garden. Inspired by the ideal of the old Lisbon mansion, the design project was based on the pre-existing local and authentic materials: lioz limestone, traditional azulejo tiles and wood. Before it was a hotel this building was used as a residence.
